กล้วยไม้สกุลหวาย Dendrobium

        กล้วยไม้สกุลหวาย (Dendrobium) เป็นกล้วยไม้สกุลใหญ่ที่สุด มีการแพร่กระจายพันธุ์ออกไปในบริเวณกว้างทั้งในทวีปเอเชียและหมู่เกาะในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก นักพฤกษศาสตร์ได้จำแนกออกเป็นหมู่ประมาณ 20 หมู่ และรวบรวมกล้วยไม้ชนิดนี้ที่ค้นพบแล้วได้ประมาณ 1,000 ชนิดพันธุ์  

         กล้วยไม้สกุลหวาย มีลักษณะการเจริญเติบโตแบบซิมโพเดียล คือ มีลำลูกกล้วย เมื่อลำต้นเจริญเติบโตเต็มที่แล้วจะแตกหน่อเป็นลำต้นใหม่และเป็นกอ ใบแข็งหนาสีเขียว ดอกมีลักษณะทั่วไปของกลีบชั้นนอกคู่บนและคู่ล่างขนาดยาวพอๆ กันโดยกลีบชั้นนอกบนจะอยู่อย่างอิสระเดี่ยวๆ ส่วนกลีบชั้นนอกคู่ล่างจะมีส่วนโคน ซึ่งมีลักษณะยื่นออกไปทางด้านหลังของส่วนล่างของดอกประสานเชื่อมติดกับฐานหรือสันหลังของเส้าเกสร  และส่วนโคนของกลีบชั้นนอกคู่ล่างและส่วนฐานของเส้าเกสรซึ่งประกอบกันจะปูดออกมา มีลักษณะคล้ายเดือยที่เรียกว่า “เดือยดอก” สำหรับกลีบชั้นในทั้งสองกลีบมีลักษณะต่างๆ กัน แล้วแต่ชนิดพันธุ์ของกล้วยไม้นั้นๆ
