          ต้นฝ้าย มีถิ่นกำเนิดในอเมริกากลางและเชียตอนใต้ จัดเป็นไม้พุ่มหรือไม้ยืนต้นขนาดเล็ก มีความสูงของต้นประมาณ 1-3 เมตร ลำต้นมีลักษณะตั้งตรง มีขนละเอียดขึ้นหนาแน่น ใบเป็นใบเดี่ยว ออกเรียงสลับ ลักษณะของใบเป็นรูปไข่กว้าง ขอบใบเว้าลึกเป็น 3-5 แฉก ใบมีขนาดกว้างและยาวประมาณ 8-12 เซนติเมตร

          ออกเป็นดอกเดี่ยวตามซอกใบและที่ปลายกิ่ง ดอกเป็นสีเหลืองอ่อน แล้วจะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีเหลืองแกมชมพูหลังจากดอกบานเต็มที่ หลังจากเจริญเต็มที่เปลือกเมล็ดจะมีลักษณะเป็นเส้นในยาวสีขาว ซึ่งจะเป็นส่วนที่นำไปใช้ในการทอเป็นเส้นใยฝ้าย
