กล้วยไม้ (Orchid) 

          กล้วยไม้ (Orchid) เป็นเป็นพืชใบเลี้ยงเดี่ยว ในวงศ์ Orchidaceae ที่ดอกมีความสวยงาม และมีความหลากหลายทั้งสีสันลวดลาย ขนาด รูปทรง และกลิ่น กล้วยไม้เป็นพืชดอกที่มีความหลากหลายมากที่สุดซึ่งมีมากกว่า 800 สกุล พบในธรรมชาติมากกว่าสองหมื่นชนิด  ด้วยความสวยงามและความหลากหลายของดอกทำให้กล้วยไม้เป็นที่นิยมไปทั่วโลก ในปัจจุบันมีการปรับปรุงสายพันธุ์โดยการผสมข้ามชนิด  ข้ามสกุลมากกว่าสามหมื่นคู่ผสม  เป็นผลทำให้กล้วยไม้มีความสวยงามและหลากหลายมากยิ่งขึ้น
ลักษณะโดยทั่วไป (Character)
         กล้วยไม้เป็นพืชที่มีส่วนต่างๆ สมบูรณ์ คือ มีราก ต้น ใบ ดอก และผล รากของกล้วยไม้ไม่มีรากแก้ว ลำต้นไม่มีแก่นไม้ ใบจัดเป็นพืชใบเลี้ยงเดี่ยวมีเส้นใบขนานกันตามความยาวของใบ ใบของกล้วยไม้มีลักษณะแตกต่างกันตามสายพันธุ์ ส่วนช่อดอก (Inflorescence) มีลักษณะแตกต่างกันไปอย่างกว้างขวางแล้วแต่สกุลและชนิดของกล้วยไม้ บางชนิดมีก้านช่อสั้นมาก
บางชนิดมีก้านช่อยาว บางชนิดมีช่อดอกตั้งแข็ง (Erect) บางชนิดมีช่อดอกลักษณะโค้งหรือห้อยหัวลง
แหล่งกำเนิด (Source of orchids)
          แหล่งกำเนิดกล้วยไม้ป่าที่สำคัญของโลกมี 2 แหล่งใหญ่ๆ ด้วยกันคือ ลาตินอเมริกา กับเอเชียแปซิฟิค สำหรับในลาตินอเมริกาเป็นบริเวณอเมริกากลางติดต่อกับเขตเหนือของอเมริกาใต้  ส่วนแหล่งกำเนิดกล้วยไม้ป่าในภูมิภาคเอเชียแปซิฟิค มีประเทศไทยเป็นศูนย์กลาง จากการสำรวจในอดีตพบว่าประเทศไทยมีกล้วยไม้อยู่ในป่าธรรมชาติไม่ต่ำกว่า 1,000 ชนิด ทั้งประเภทที่พบอยู่บนต้นไม้ บนพื้นผิวของภูเขาและบนพื้นดิน  นั่นแสดงว่าสภาพแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติของประเทศไทยเอื้อต่อการเจริญเติบโตของกล้วยไม้เป็นอย่างมาก
